What is the Forres Toastmaster club?

It is part of an international network of over 10,000 clubs in a not-for-profit organisation operating in more than 70 countries. We encourage our members to improve their communication and leadership skills through a structured course of speeches with 10 specific different objectives.

Who can attend?

Anyone interested in developing their communication and leadership skills!  We are a diverse group with people from many different backgrounds who want to be able to speak up and speak out with confidence.

I’m really, really nervous about speaking in front of groups – how will this change?

We are encouraging and supportive, welcoming and helping members of all abilities and experience. Through repeated exposure in small steps you will gain confidence. Various techniques will also aid you.

 I’m really, really good at speaking in public – what will I gain from joining the club?

Are you a truly motivational speaker? Do you get paid to inspire large audiences? Is your message as effective and memorable as you would like it to be? As you know, communication and leadership skills are rarely perfect!  In Toastmasters we encourage each other to reach new dimensions. Also, the art of sharing your existing skills is deeply satisfying.

What happens at a typical meeting?

We gather for drinks and a chat from 19.30 onwards.  The President opens the meeting promptly at 19.45 and then hands over to other members who take on various leadership and co-ordinating roles. You and other guests will be invited to introduce yourselves, but only to speak in front of the group if you wish.

The meeting includes three or four speeches, lasting 5 – 7 minutes, and also some “table topics” which involve impromptu speeches lasting 90 seconds. Each role is evaluated with positive and constructive comments.

You can call or email us between meetings (see contact details overleaf).  We recommend coming along to a meeting and asking us for more information during the break or after the meeting. You are welcome to visit us a number of times before deciding to join the club.
